String Fling 2022 @ Kansas State University January 15-16, 49th Year
Dear String Educator: Below is the information for String Fling 2022 at Kansas State University. It’s our 49th year of offering an outstanding experience to Kansas string students.. Each year 500+ string students come to Manhattan to benefit from a great orchestral experience with their peers from other schools.
For the safety of all, this year we have decided to omit the 5th and 6th grade orchestras, as at this time students of that age group are ineligible for the Covid vaccine. Along with splitting the 8/9 orchestra into two smaller groups and requiring masks, we will do the best we can to gather safely this year.
All rehearsals and concerts will be held within the K-State Student Union building. We look forward to having everyone under one roof, and the convenience of the parking garage to the rehearsal spaces. Concerts will take place in Forum Hall within the Union. Parents and teachers will have many more comfortable spaces in which to relax while the students work!
The following conductors have been invited to conduct the four orchestras for 2022. Orchestra assignments will be emailed in early January, and you can also check the "Orchestra Locations" page for updates. 7th Grade Orchestras 7A Martha Barnhill 7B Kristen Toll
8th/9th Grade Orchestra 8/9A Joel Martin 8/9B Nate McClendon
COVID CONSIDERATIONS: MASKS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL PEOPLE INSIDE BUILDINGS AT K-STATE. NO EXCEPTIONS!
All students are expected to be on their best behavior during String Fling weekend.
No matter what the weather conditions are, String Fling is never canceled.
There are no refunds. Refunds cannot be made if your group has to cancel because of the weather, or for individuals who cannot come for any reason. We regret needing to have this policy, but we hire conductors and rent facilities based on registration numbers and still need to pay those bills. Beyond the bills, your registration fees go to string scholarships for K-State students. Who knows? It might be your child who benefits someday!
Home-schooled students studying string instruments are welcome to participate in String Fling.
If you plan to attend String Fling and bring students, parental help will probably be necessary. Each group of students must have an adult sponsor or teacher with them.
You are responsible for making motel reservations and your meals.
Bring pencils. Bring music stands, and please have both sections clearly marked with name and town.
K-State students will be available on-site to sell strings and accessories and to make minor repairs.
The K-State Union will have restaurants open for lunch and dinner on Saturday.
Music will not be sent out in advance, but a repertoire list for each orchestra will be posted online.
Dress for the Sunday concert:
Please dress up for this special event. Nice pants, dresses/skirts, no t-shirts, please! Sincerely,
All registration is ONLINE! Click here to go to the Cognito Forms site and follow the prompts. You can pay with Paypal or check (see below) and receive a receipt through this link, in addition to filling out your rosters. Checks should be made out to "Kansas State University," and the mailing address is below. If you need a different type of invoice from that generated by Cognito forms, please send details to Cora Cooper, [email protected].
EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION IS OPEN NOV. 1-DEC. 10 Online registration:
Directors should enter students' names on the appropriate rosters (through the Cognito Forms link, click here). Please make a copy the completed rosters and keep it for your records.
Early Bird Fee per student: $35. Please see the schedule of fee increases above. Pay with Paypal through the Cognito Forms website, or pay with a check by mail.
Please write one check to pay for all the students, and make out the check payable to: “KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY” (please double check that your school accountant changes any older records, as we are no longer affiliated with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra account). Mail the check to: Dr. Cora Cooper, Kansas State University, School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, 109 McCain, Manhattan, KS 66506.
This fee does not cover lodging and meals for String Fling. Any motel reservation payments are completely separate from String Fling and should be made directly to the motel. Make your motel reservations as soon as possible! Information on discounted motel room blocks is available on the "Motel and Restaurant" page.
Please register and try to pay by December 10. It's more important for us to have the registration info than the payment by that date (though we appreciate both!)
If parents register students separately, please inform them as to whether their violinist child should play 1st or 2nd. We ask that you split the total number of violinists registered for each orchestra between the two sections for balance.
We'll post information about A and B orchestra placement (by city) and locations by January 10 on the "Orchestra Locations" page. You'll be able to tell your students their orchestra location before they go to String Fling. Please have them write the location information on a card and put it in their instrument cases.
Late registrations cause many problems with planning orchestra size, retaining conductors, chair count, music parts, etc. Please try to take advantage of the Early Bird December 10 deadline.
