About String Fling
The first String Fling at Kansas State University took place in 1973. Each year more than 500 students in grades 5-9 converge on campus for a weekend of orchestra rehearsal and performance, with seven orchestras led by experienced Kansas school orchestra directors. Warren Walker, K-State Professor of Cello, directed String Fling from 1976-1987, and Professor Emeritus Dr. David Littrell was director from 1988-2018. Dr. Cora Cooper, Professor of Upper Strings, and Rachel Dirks, Director of Orchestral Activities, share the duties as Co-Directors since the 2019 String Fling.
Students who participate in their school orchestras and home-schooled students who study string instruments are all welcome to attend String Fling.
String Fling offers an exciting opportunity for young students to play in large orchestras and perform at K-State. Proceeds from the registration fees help fund scholarships for K-State orchestra students. Attendance at String Fling provides a wonderful musical experience for younger students, and supports university students in pursuing music degrees or a life-long avocation!
